Mrs. Appelbaum graduated cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, and began her immigration career as a litigation attorney with legacy INS through the Attorney General's Honors Program. She was appointed and served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Texas, Houston during six of those years. She was promoted to Associate Regional Counsel for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services when the new agency was formed in March 2003 under the Department of Homeland Security. She recently retired from that position in September 2011, after working more than 20 years in immigration law. Her love of immigration law began as a child with her immigrant mother and continued with her marriage to an immigrant refugee 35 years ago.
